What: "When parties lose power, pundits generally expect them to move to the center. But they don't, at least not at first. Instead, recent history suggests that defeated parties become more extreme." This is very good article that looks at ~50 years of presidential elections. The core of the article; when a US political party falls out of power, they elect candidates who are ideologically pure and extreme. Typically and ironically, they loose the election they wanted to win.
